Sometimes you forget how important simple things are. This week we provided several people with the gift of sight, well, at least the gift of being able to clearly see words and pictures on a page.
Last December for the toy/Christmas celebration service trip, one member of the group was an optometrist. He did over 500 eye exams in 4 days. We had hundreds of glasses donated for that project and we purchased several hundred reading glasses and had them brought to Cahabon by bus the week our volunteers were here. Overall EnLevo gave out over 700 pairs of glasses during that week.
EnLevo has a few hundred of the reader glasses on hand at our facility. As we worked with the people for the remote learning beta test this week, several indicated that they could not see the screen of the tablet. I pulled out the box of reading glasses and we started having the people try the different prescriptions. It was incredible to see their expressions as the letters and pictures on the pages became clear.
Two old ladies who were supporting some of our beta testers also needed glasses. When one of the ladies put the glasses on and we showed her a book her face lit up! She started touching the pages and tracing the lines of the pictures. She cried as she looked at the book. It’s amazing how little things, like a simple pair of glasses, can change someone’s life.
