A mother and child hold pencils together for the first time. Discover how our preschools are breaking the cycle of poverty.

Imagine a classroom where a mother and child hold pencils for the very first time. In rural Guatemala, educational poverty often spans generations, and many mothers cannot even write their own names. To change this, EnLevo opened three indigenous preschools with a unique approach: mothers must attend and actively learn alongside their children.

A significant hurdle for these families is not speaking the national language. Public schools teach in Spanish, leaving native Q'eqchi' speakers feeling lost and intimidated. By teaching in the community's native tongue, the EnLevo preschools create a safe, non-threatening environment. This gentle approach allows mothers to overcome their fears and embrace education with true dignity.

The impact of this shared learning is incredible to witness. Children develop crucial early literacy skills, preparing them to enter primary school with skills and confidence. At the same time, mothers discover their own remarkable potential. By gaining a basic education, they become equipped to uplift their households and build resilient, thriving families.

The stories of hope emerging from these classrooms are truly inspiring. By bringing mothers and children together to learn in their native language, these preschools are doing more than teaching the basics—they are breaking the cycle of generational poverty. Discover more about this mission and how you can help these families build a self-sufficient future.
